History of Horsforth
Horsforth was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 under various names including Horseford, Horseforde and Hoseforde. Its name derives from the terms horse and ford. This ford reference refers to the river crossing on the River Aire in the village, used historically for the transporting woollen goods between Horsforth, Bradford, Pudsey and Shipley. The original ford was located just off Calverley Lane, but it was later replaced by a stone footbridge at the start of the 19th century.
